A study in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery compared 100 matched patients, half with temporomandibular disorder (TMD), and found that the TMD group scored nearly twice as high on a sleep apnea risk questionnaire, with over 60 percent at intermediate or high risk versus 24 percent of controls. The association held after adjusting for age, sex, and BMI, and the authors recommend routine OSA screening for TMD patients and closer collaboration between dental and sleep medicine specialists.
